Started by Amazon, I have seen this concept gradually adopted by other big tech companies. An internal press release, painting the product in its ideal state, is typically written by a product manager to get alignment for new initiatives - even before a line of code is written. Rather than coming up with a ‘brilliant’ idea and force fitting customers to it, working backwards from the customer ensures if the benefits don’t sound very exciting to the customers, it probably should not be built.
This document provides a template for the working backwards Press Release. It also follows it up with an example that puts it all together.
